M04: Building Social Connectedness & Resilience with Seniors
Research points to the negative health impacts of loneliness and social isolation and to the protective influence of social connections. COVID-19 has underscored the importance of social connectedness to the mental health and well-being of people of all ages. For many seniors, COVID-19 has dangerously deepened existing challenges with isolation. Summer 2021’s extreme heat-related deaths – largely of isolated seniors – was a horrific reminder of our need to be better prepared for climate impacts.
Join Hey Neighbour Collective, Brightside Community Homes Foundation, Seniors Services Society, Building Resilient Neighbourhoods and OpenLab to learn about promising approaches for building social connectedness and resilience in independent seniors housing contexts. We will explore how housing operators can partner with community organizations, how to engage residents in creative programming, and more.
